Authentic Japanese Shodo Starter Kit
Everything you need to begin traditional Japanese calligraphy — in one box.
Shodo is more than writing. It is a quiet practice of posture, breath, and focus, passed down in Japan for over 1,500 years. This set brings that experience to your desk.
What's inside:
- Suzuka ink stick – Solid ink made from soot and natural glue. Ground with water, it produces deep, rich black tones with a subtle fragrance.
- Ink stone – A stone surface for grinding ink. Add water to the flat "land," grind slowly, and watch the ink come to life.
- Water dropper – A small ceramic vessel for adding water to the ink stone, drop by drop.
- Kumano brushes (large & small) – The large brush for bold characters, the small brush for fine strokes and signatures. Handcrafted in Kumano, Hiroshima.
- Brush rest – Keeps your brush off the desk when you pause, protecting the tip and your workspace.
- Felt mat, paper & paperweight – Everything to set up your writing space and start immediately.
How it works:
Unlike bottled ink, traditional Japanese ink is solid. You add a few drops of water to the ink stone and move the ink stick in slow circles — about five minutes until the ink thickens and a soft fragrance rises. This unhurried process is itself part of the art.
