Crafted by Shinseido, the sole surviving workshop upholding 1,300 years of ink-making tradition in Suzuka, Mie Prefecture, this oil-soot ink is made by kneading soot collected from burning vegetable oil together with animal glue, then slowly drying it in ash before allowing it to mature naturally for one to three years.

  • Oil-soot character: A lustrous, deep black with rich gradation, allowing expressive brushstrokes — the defining charm of oil-soot ink
  • Fragrance: A subtle plum scent rises with each grinding, the source of its name "Baika" (plum fragrance)
  • Ease of use: Grinds down quickly, making it easy to handle for practice
  • Uses: Suitable for kanji, kana, and harmony style (mixed kanji-kana) — versatile across all forms of calligraphy
  • Size: 3-cho type (a standard size classification for calligraphy ink sticks)

An easy stick to work into daily practice, from beginners to seasoned calligraphers.
