About 30 years ago, when heavy lace parasols were mainstream, the Umbrella Sun parasol began when I created a Japanese-style parasol that would complement a T-shirt and jeans—something I'd want to carry myself. Our wish is for people to go out cheerfully and energetically, even under the dazzling sun, with their favorite parasol.
We primarily use kimono fabric made in Japan for our materials. We carefully dismantle kimonos that can no longer be worn, and incorporating fabrics that never became kimonos, and sometimes even Saori weaving and obi sashes, we re-create the traditional beauty of Japan into stylish, high-quality "large accessories."
The underside of the parasol features accent colors or highlights, designed to brighten the mood of the person carrying it. We prioritize the aesthetic when the parasol is open, for example, by not sewing the retaining strap to the outer surface, pursuing a design that considers how it will be used. Manufacturing takes place in Japan.
Eiko Watanabe, the representative, has continued making parasols for many years while working various other jobs. In addition to holding solo exhibitions, fashion shows dedicated solely to parasols, and participating in the Hakata Dontaku Parade, she also regularly hosts hand-sewing workshops where participants can transform cherished kimonos into parasols.
