Modern origami art, born from a single square.
Apriori.Art
Apriori.Art is a brand established to redefine origami from a "children's pastime" to "contemporary art for adults." Co-founder Hironori Kano won the Origami Grand Prix at age 10. Later, while gaining experience in English and web marketing, he noticed a lack of a system for skilled artists to sustain themselves professionally through origami, leading him to launch the brand in 2025.
Each piece is created from a single square sheet of paper, without any cuts. The strict constraint that the arrangement of folds itself forms the structure is transformed into the creativity that produces unique forms. The philosophy that "constraints are not a disadvantage, but rather create forms that cannot be born otherwise" is embedded in every single work.
The materials primarily consist of Japanese paper, with washi from various regions of Japan selected for each piece. After combining ganpishi (gampi paper) and kozoshi (mulberry paper) and, if necessary, laminating them to create a single sheet, production begins. The paper selection, which involves assessing thickness, strength, crease retention, color development, and translucency when light hits it, is a crucial step in the design process.
Production mainly takes place in their studio based at 100BANCH in Shibuya, Tokyo, with all works being folded by hand. By addressing challenges such as the online integration of origami, language barriers, and lack of business recognition, the brand is expanding the potential of origami as an industry where artists can continue to create, folding traditional culture into the future.
